Father Augustus was America's First Known African-American Catholic Priest. He was born April 1, 1854 in Ralls County Missouri he was subjected to slavery. His slave master were Catholics and taught his family about God. Tolton loved God and wanted to become a priest at an early age. His mother Martha escaped to Quincy IL when Tolton was seven. No seminary in America would not accept a Negro student until the 1900's. Nevertheless, Tolton had to go to Rome to study the priesthood. He became a priest on April 24,1886. Thanks be to God! He fought against all odds and meet destiny.
